ABSTRACT

A malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is the most common soft tissue sarcoma in adults. About 70% of tumors arise from the soft tissue of the extremities with only 12~14% of the tumors occur in the retroperitoneum. The clinical characteristics of this tumor consist of an abdominal mass, tendency for local recurrence, paraneoplastic syndrome and a poor prognosis. A 51-year-old woman was admitted to St. Vincent's Hospital with complaining of fever and an abdominal mass. Ultrasound and computed tomography revealed a huge, heterogenous mass in the lesser sac area. The patient underwent an extensive mass resection with a histologic examination revealing a MFH which was positive for alpha1- antitrypsin. We report a case of MFH presenting in the lesser sac with a review of the literatures.

ABSTRACT

Various factors such as senescence, stress, neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD) contribute to the impairments of organs, especially brain. Also, they should be negative factors on normal brain function, like as memory and cognition. In this study, the neuroprotective role of BF-7, extracted from Bombyx mori, was examined agaist scopolamine-induced neurotoxicity in SK-N-SH cells. In order to know if the BF-7 has positive role on the cognition and memory, we examined using SD rat model and human. Scopolamine-induced memory impairments were observed, as measured by the passive avoidance and water maze tests, but treatment with BF-7 significantly improved memory and cognitive function. Moreover, the memory index and memory preservation of clinical experiments using MMSE-K tests were significantly improved memory and cognitive function. This results strongly represent that the BF-7 play effectively positive role in the improvement of brain function including learning and memory. Taken together, our results suggested that the BF-7 should be useful for developing strategies protecting nervous system and improving brain function.

ABSTRACT

Pulmonary sequestration is an abnormal lung tissue that does not communicate with tracheobronchial tree, and that receives blood supply from anomalous arteries. Pulmonary sequestration is divided into two anatomical forms, intralobar and extralobar. Extralobar pulmonary sequestration is usually located between the diaphragm and the lower lobe and has systemic arterial supply and venous drainage, and most patients are diagnosed in their infancy. We report an extralobar pulmonary sequestration located between the right upper lobe and the lower lobe in a 48-year-old female adult, which has anomalous blood supply from the right pulmonary artery and venous drainage directly into the left atrium.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Adenosine has gained wide popularity in the emergency medical service system(EMS) since its approval for use in the treatment of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia(PSVT). But, few study about its efficacy and safety have been reported in this country. Therefore we had studied the efficacy of adenosine in the patients with PSVT in the emergency department(ED). METHOD: A prospective outcome study was performed from July, 1996 to June, 1997 at the Sanggye Paik Hospital. Inje University. PSVT was diagnosised based on emergency physician's interpretation of the 12 channel ECG. patient's age, sex, symptoms, systolic blood pressure, heart rate, elapse time to sinus rhythm and side effects were recorded. RESULTS: Twenty seven cases received adenosine for diagnosed PSVT in the ED for 1 year. The cases were 6 man and 21 women. The mean age was 53.4 years old. Three cases were considered unstable PSVT. In twenty six cases(96.3%) were converted to normal sinus rhythm after adenosine therapy. None of the patients who converted to sinus rhythm had recurrent PSVT or required additional medication. Various adverse effects of adenosine were noted in all patients but were transient and clinically insignificant. CONCLUSION: Intrvenous adenosine is an effective, safe and urgent treatment PSVT and no significant side effects were happened in emergency department.
